Names of Allah

Al-Awwal

الأول

The First — whose existence precedes all things, having no beginning.

What does Al-Awwal mean?

Al-Awwal is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The First". It affirms that Allah is eternal and without beginning — He existed before all things, when nothing else existed, and He brought everything else into being. He is not "first" within time, for He created time itself; rather, He is absolutely prior to all that exists.

The Meaning in Depth

The Prophet ﷺ explained this name precisely: "You are Al-Awwal, so there is nothing before You" (Muslim 2713). Everything other than Allah has a beginning — a moment when it was not. Allah alone has no beginning; His existence is necessary and eternal. This frees the mind from the impossible question "what came before God," for there is no "before" with the First.

Al-Awwal in the Quran

  • "He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is Knowing of all things." (57:3)

This single verse gathers four names — Al-Awwal, Al-Akhir, Az-Zahir, Al-Batin — describing God's relationship to time and existence from every direction.

Living by This Name

Al-Awwal grounds the believer in the truth that everything traces back to God as its origin. It humbles the heart: whatever blessing, ability, or good one has, its first source is Allah. And it gives peace, for the One who was before all things is in control of all things. The Prophet ﷺ taught a supplication at bedtime invoking Al-Awwal and Al-Akhir to seek relief from debt and worry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does "the First" mean Allah had a beginning before others?

No. It means the opposite: He has no beginning at all. He is "First" in the sense of being eternally prior to everything, existing when nothing else did. Time and sequence are His creation; He transcends them.

What came before Allah?

Nothing. As the Prophet ﷺ said, "You are Al-Awwal, so there is nothing before You." The question of a "before" does not apply to the One who is eternal and the origin of all, including time itself.

Etymology & origin

Al-Awwal (الأول) means "the First", from the root A-W-L (أ-و-ل), related to beginning and priority. As a name of Allah it does not mean the first in a sequence of time, but the One who is absolutely prior to all things — before whom there was nothing, the eternal beginning of all existence, Himself without beginning.
