Names of Allah

Al-Fattah

Al-Fattāḥ

الفتاح

The Opener, the Judge — who opens doors of mercy, knowledge and victory, and judges between His servants.

What does Al-Fattah mean?

Al-Fattah is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Opener," "The Supreme Judge". It carries two beautiful meanings: Allah is the One who opens what is closed — doors of mercy, provision, relief, and guidance — and He is the One who judges between His creation with perfect truth and justice, "opening" the reality of every matter. No one can withhold what He opens, and none can open what He withholds.

The Meaning in Depth

Every closed door — a hardship that seems endless, a heart hardened against faith, a need that finds no way out — opens only by the will of Al-Fattah. He opens the locks of difficulty with ease, opens hearts to belief, opens the treasures of His provision, and opens the gates of victory and good. As the Supreme Judge (al-Fattah), He will resolve every dispute among creation on the Day of Judgement.

Al-Fattah in the Quran

  • "Say: Our Lord will bring us together; then He will judge (yaftah) between us in truth. And He is the Knowing Judge (Al-Fattah al-Alim)." (34:26)
  • "Whatever mercy Allah opens for the people, none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds, none can release it thereafter." (35:2)
  • "If you seek a judgement (fath), the judgement has come to you." (8:19)

Living by This Name

When every worldly door seems shut, Al-Fattah opens a way. This name fills the believer with hope and patience in times of difficulty, turning to the only One who can open relief. It also teaches reliance: one knocks on the door of Al-Fattah through dua, righteous deeds, and trust, certain that He opens to whoever turns to Him sincerely. The Prophet ﷺ would seek "the opening" (al-fath) of good from Allah in his supplications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that Allah "opens" things?

It means He removes obstacles and grants what was withheld: He opens the way out of hardship, opens the heart to guidance, opens the doors of sustenance and success, and opens the truth through His judgement.

How is Al-Fattah a name of judgement?

Because to "open" (fath) also means to judge decisively between disputing parties. Al-Fattah will judge between all creation on the Day of Judgement with perfect, all-knowing justice (34:26).

Etymology & origin

Al-Fattah (الفتاح) is from the root F-T-Ḥ (ف-ت-ح), meaning "to open" and also "to judge between" (as a judge "opens" the truth of a dispute). The intensive form Fattah denotes the One who constantly opens: opening doors of mercy and provision, opening hearts to guidance, and opening the truth by His judgement.
