Beliefs (Aqeedah)

Kufr

الكفر

Disbelief — rejection or denial of faith, the Prophet ﷺ, or any necessarily-known part of the religion; the opposite of Iman.

What is Kufr?

Kufr is disbelief — the covering, denial, or rejection of any of the core truths of Islam that make up faith (iman): belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree. A person outside of Islam is called a kafir. The word carries the sense of veiling: kufr covers what should be seen and known.

Kufr Akbar and Kufr Asghar

Classical scholars distinguish two major categories:

  • Kufr Akbar (major kufr) — takes a person outside of Islam. If a person dies upon it, they die outside the Muslim community.
  • Kufr Asghar (lesser kufr) — refers to sins that the Quran or Sunnah name with the word "kufr" but which do not take a person outside of Islam. It is a warning of severity, not a legal exit from faith. Example: the Prophet ﷺ said "Whoever swears by other than Allah has committed shirk" (Tirmidhi 1535) — a warning to reverence Allah alone, not a categorical judgement.

Types of Major Kufr

The scholars enumerate several forms of major kufr:

  • Kufr al-Inkar — outright denial with tongue and heart.
  • Kufr al-Juhud — inner acknowledgement of truth but outward denial (as Iblis, Quran 2:34).
  • Kufr al-I'rad — turning away entirely, neither affirming nor denying, out of disregard.
  • Kufr an-Nifaq — outward Islam with inward disbelief (hypocrisy — Quran 63).
  • Kufr ash-Shakk — established doubt about what iman requires certainty in.

Its Reality in the Quran

Allah says: "Whoever denies faith — his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers" (Quran 5:5). And: "Indeed, those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding therein eternally. Those are the worst of creatures. Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds — those are the best of creatures" (Quran 98:6-7). These are stark verses, and yet Allah opens the door of repentance: "Say to those who have disbelieved: If they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them" (Quran 8:38).

The Danger of Takfir

Sunni scholars have always warned strongly against takfir — hastily declaring a Muslim to be a disbeliever. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a man says to his brother, 'You disbeliever' — one of the two has borne it" (Bukhari 6104, Muslim 60). Judging a person's inner state belongs to Allah; the community's task is to hold to the truth and to invite others to it with wisdom and beautiful preaching (Quran 16:125). A person is not declared outside Islam except by a scholar of qualification, after strict conditions of clarity, intention and understanding are met.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are non-Muslims all "kafirs"?

In the technical Arabic sense, one who has not accepted Islam is called a kafir. In modern Muslim discourse, however, the word carries harsh connotations and is often avoided in favour of more polite terms — ghayr muslim (non-Muslim), People of the Book, etc. The Prophet ﷺ taught kindness and just dealings with non-Muslims who were peaceful (Quran 60:8), whatever the technical term.

Can a person who fell into kufr return?

Yes. Every person who returns to Islam sincerely — with the shahada, and sincere repentance — is welcomed by Allah, whose forgiveness is greater than all sins (Quran 39:53). The door of tawbah remains open until the soul reaches the throat.

Etymology & origin

Kufr (الكفر) is from the root K-F-R, whose original meaning is "to cover, to conceal" — as a farmer covers a seed with earth (Quran 57:20 uses the word for those who till the land). In Islam it denotes disbelief: the covering, hiding, or denial of the truth of Allah, His messengers, or the necessary parts of the religion. It is the opposite of iman.
