Women in Islam
Zaynab bint Jahsh
Zaynab bint Jaḥsh
A wife of the Prophet ﷺ and a Mother of the Believers, whose marriage was by direct command of Allah in the Quran. Known for her piety and generous charity.
Who was Zaynab bint Jahsh?
Zaynab bint Jahsh was a wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and a Mother of the Believers. She holds a unique distinction: her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ was ordained directly by Allah and announced in the Quran, and it served to abolish a false pre-Islamic custom. She was also renowned for her devout worship and her exceptional generosity to the poor.
Her Story
Zaynab was first married to Zayd ibn Harithah, a freedman whom the Prophet ﷺ had previously adopted and who was known as "Zayd ibn Muhammad". When that marriage did not work and ended in divorce, Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to marry Zaynab — "So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you..." (33:37) — precisely in order to establish that an adopted son is not the same as a biological son, and that there is no sin in marrying the former wife of an adopted son. This abolished a deeply held pre-Islamic taboo. Zaynab was proud, in a praiseworthy sense, that Allah Himself had arranged her marriage from above the seven heavens. She was deeply devout, fasting and praying much, and worked with her own hands, giving the proceeds in charity.
Zaynab in the Quran
- "...So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you, in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons..." (33:37)
- The verses also abolished adoption as a basis for lineage: "Call them by [the names of] their fathers..." (33:5).
Her Virtues and Legacy
Zaynab embodies devotion, generosity, and submission to Allah's decree. The Prophet ﷺ said of his wives that the one who would join him first after his death would be "the longest of you in the hand" — and they later understood this to mean the most charitable, which proved to be Zaynab, who worked and gave everything away in charity. Her marriage stands as a permanent lesson that Allah's law overrides hollow social customs, and her life is a model of worship and open-handed giving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Zaynab's marriage mentioned in the Quran?
Her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ was commanded by Allah to abolish the false pre-Islamic belief that an adopted son is equivalent to a biological son. By marrying the divorced former wife of his adopted son Zayd, the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated, on Allah's instruction, that such a marriage is lawful (33:37).
What does "the longest in the hand" mean?
The Prophet ﷺ told his wives the first to rejoin him after death would be "the longest of you in the hand". They first thought it meant physical arm-length, but realised it referred to generosity. Zaynab, who worked and gave abundantly in charity, was the first to pass away — confirming the meaning.
