Names of Allah

Al-Mujib

Al-Mujīb

المجيب

The Responsive — who answers the prayers of those who call upon Him sincerely.

What does Al-Mujib mean?

Al-Mujib is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Responsive," "The Answerer of Prayers". It affirms that Allah hears and responds to those who call upon Him — answering the supplication (dua) of the believer, the cry of the distressed, and the need of every creature. He is near, hearing, and responsive to all who turn to Him.

The Meaning in Depth

Al-Mujib responds in the way that is best for His servant: sometimes by granting exactly what is asked, sometimes by averting a harm in its place, and sometimes by storing the reward for the Hereafter. So no sincere dua is ever wasted. His response is not delayed by distance or burdened by numbers; He answers all callers at once, however many and however small their requests.

Al-Mujib in the Quran

  • "And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me." (2:186)
  • "...Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive (Mujib)." (11:61)
  • "Is He not best who responds to the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes evil?" (27:62)

Living by This Name

Al-Mujib invites the believer to a life of dua — to ask Allah for everything, with confidence that He hears and responds. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Your Lord is shy and generous; He is shy, when His servant raises his hands to Him, to return them empty" (Tirmidhi 3556). The believer asks with presence of heart, certainty of response, and patience, knowing that Al-Mujib answers in the form that is truly best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it sometimes feel like a dua is not answered?

Every sincere dua is answered, but in one of three ways: Allah grants the request, averts an equivalent harm, or stores a reward for the Hereafter. What seems unanswered may be answered in a better, unseen form, or delayed for the right time.

What helps a dua be accepted?

Sincerity, presence of heart, lawful food and earnings, calling upon Allah by His names, sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, choosing blessed times (such as the last third of the night and before breaking the fast), and not being hasty in expecting a response.

Etymology & origin

Al-Mujib (المجيب) is from the root J-W-B (ج-و-ب), meaning "to answer, to respond". From it come ijabah (response, acceptance) and jawab (answer). Al-Mujib is the One who answers and responds — who hears the call of those who call upon Him and responds to the supplication of the one in need.
