Names of Allah

An-Nafi'

An-Nāfiʿ

النافع

The Benefactor — who creates all benefit and bestows it on whom He wills.

What does An-Nafi mean?

An-Nafi is one of the 99 Names of Allah, meaning "The Bringer of Benefit". It affirms that all benefit and good come from Allah alone. Whatever helps, heals, nourishes, or profits a creature does so only by His will. Medicine, food, wealth, and people are but means; the true source of every benefit is An-Nafi. It is understood together with its counterpart, Ad-Darr (the One who allows harm).

The Meaning in Depth

No created thing can bring benefit by itself; it is merely a channel through which Allah, An-Nafi, sends good. The medicine heals only if He wills, the food nourishes only by His permission. This frees the heart from over-attachment to means and roots all hope in the Giver of benefit. The Prophet ﷺ taught this directly: "If the entire nation were to gather to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already decreed for you" (Tirmidhi 2516).

An-Nafi in the Quran (related meaning)

  • "And if Allah should touch you with harm, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, there is no repeller of His bounty." (10:107)
  • "Say: I hold not for myself benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed." (7:188)

Living by This Name

An-Nafi teaches the believer to seek benefit from its true source: to take the means (medicine, work, study) while turning the heart to the One who makes them beneficial. It dissolves anxiety and reliance on creatures, and inspires gratitude for every good received as a gift from An-Nafi. The believer also strives to be a source of benefit to others, for the Prophet ﷺ said the best of people are those most beneficial to others.

Frequently Asked Questions

If means like medicine bring benefit, why call only Allah An-Nafi?

Because means have no power in themselves; they benefit only when and as Allah wills. Medicine cures by His permission, not independently. An-Nafi is the true source behind every cause, so the believer uses the means while relying on Him alone for the result.

How are An-Nafi and Ad-Darr understood together?

They are a complementary pair: benefit and harm are both in Allah's hand, by His wisdom. Recognising this frees the heart from fearing or hoping in creatures, and directs all reliance to the One who alone brings benefit and permits harm.

Etymology & origin

An-Nafi (النافع) is from the root N-F-ʿ (ن-ف-ع), meaning "benefit, advantage, usefulness". From it come nafʿ (benefit) and manfaʿah (advantage). An-Nafi is the Bringer of Benefit: the One from whom all benefit flows and by whose will alone anything can profit or help His creation.
