Fajr Prayer Time — When Is Fajr Today?
Fajr is the first of the five daily prayers in Islam, prayed in the pre-dawn darkness. Its time begins at true dawn (subh sadiq) — when the first horizontal light spreads across the horizon — and ends at sunrise (shuruq). Fajr consists of 2 rakah of obligatory (fard) prayer, preceded by 2 rakah of a highly recommended sunnah.
The Fajr azan is unique: it includes the extra phrase "As-salatu khayrun mina'n-nawm" — "Prayer is better than sleep." Praying Fajr on time, especially in congregation, carries immense reward: the Prophet ﷺ said whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah.

If you miss Fajr due to sleep or forgetfulness, pray it as soon as you wake or remember — this is a valid make-up (qada). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers."
Why does the Fajr azan say "prayer is better than sleep"? +
The phrase "As-salatu khayrun mina'n-nawm" is added only in the Fajr azan to gently encourage the faithful to rise from sleep for this pre-dawn prayer. It is part of the established Sunnah of the Fajr call.
